What is CS2 Desync? Difference Between Server and Client
We explain in detail how desync in CS2 arises from the time difference between the server and the client, and its effect on tick rate, interpolation and cheating.
How Does Desync Occur?
Desync arises from the difference in time between the server's recording of a player's location and perspective and the moment that player sees it on their screen. CS2's Source 2 engine sends each client's transaction data packet by packet to the server; Network latency, packet loss, or high ping cause these packets to arrive at the server at different times. The server tries to compensate for missing or late data by extrapolation, but this estimate does not always correspond exactly to the player's actual current position. As a result, while a player may appear to have turned a corner on their screen, the server may still record them a few degrees behind.
The Role of Tick Rate and Interpolation
CS2 servers update world state 64 times per second (64 ticks); This leaves a gap of approximately 15.6 milliseconds between each tick. The client uses interpolation—that is, drawing an estimated intermediate frame between two actual data points—to smooth the movement of other players to fill in these gaps. The higher the Interp value, the further the displayed position lags behind the actual server status. This lag becomes more noticeable in players with high ping and creates a difference between the moment the opponent fires and the moment it appears on the screen.
Lag Compensation and Hit Records
Valve's lag compensation system checks accuracy by 'rewinding' the target's past position based on the firing player's ping. This ensures that even a high ping player can hit fairly, but it is also the actual mechanism that creates the 'I got hit behind the corner' feeling for low ping players. When the server compensates for the delay in firing, it is based on the location seen by the shooting player, not the actual location of the target at that moment. Therefore, when two players' screens are compared in demo recordings, the event appears to have occurred at different times.
Effect of Desync on Cheating
Desync directly affects the accuracy of modules such as ESP and aimbot because these modules read the raw location data from the server, not the interpolated location visible on the screen. CSCodep's PX8.2 architecture aims to lock on to the target's 'real' location even at high ping by synchronizing aimbot targeting with both the server tick data and its own interpolation estimate. In case of high desync (bad network connection, packet loss) the aimbot may follow the target slightly behind; In this case, improving ping and connection quality rather than reducing the smoothing value is a more effective solution.
False Suspicion of Cheating Due to Desync
Legitimate players experiencing high desync sometimes claim they were hit from behind the corner and accuse the opponent of using wallhacks, but most of the time this is just a result of network latency. The most practical steps to reduce desync on your own connection are to use wired internet, leave the interp value at default and turn off unnecessary background downloads.
