Why You Shouldn't Use External Cheats: Overlay, FPS Loss and the PX8.2 Internal Fix
An external cheat opens a separate overlay window on top of the game. That window is redrawn every frame, which costs FPS and causes stutter. That is why we retired CS2 External and replaced it with PX8.2 Internal, which runs inside the game.
What is an external cheat?
An external cheat never enters the game process. It runs as a separate program, reads the game memory from the outside, and opens its own window to draw what it finds. That window is transparent and is placed exactly on top of the game at the same size — this is what an overlay is. You see a single image on screen, but behind it there are two separate windows stacked on each other.
What exactly does the overlay window do?
The overlay window has one job: drawing. Boxes, skeletons, names, distances. But it draws into its own window, not into the game frame. So the image that reaches your screen is produced by two separate sources, and the Windows desktop manager (DWM) composites the two into a single picture on every frame.
Why did the FPS problems happen?
A game's FPS depends on how long a single frame takes to prepare. With external running, two extra jobs land on every frame: the overlay's own drawing and the compositing of the two windows. As frame time grows, FPS drops directly. On top of that, the game and the overlay do not wait for each other; frames do not arrive at even intervals, so even when the FPS number looks fine, your eye reads it as stutter.
Downsides beyond FPS
Performance was not the only problem with external. Being a separate window caused a series of practical issues too.
That is why we retired External
On 27 August 2026 we retired CS2 External completely. Most of the feedback we received came down to one thing: FPS loss and stutter. Those were not a misconfiguration — they came from the architecture itself, so the fix was not to improve external but to move the drawing to the right place. The old External card still shows in the menu for a while, but it takes you straight to PX8.2.
The fix: PX8.2 Internal
PX8.2 runs inside the game and opens no separate overlay window. The drawing happens as part of the game's own frame. With the second draw loop and the compositing step gone, the FPS loss and the stutter are gone too. You toggle the menu in game with the INSERT key.
What is next: PX8.3 Skinchanger
The CS2 Skinchanger that ships with PX8.3 is written and working; it is currently in testing. It will be released when testing is complete — we are not giving a date in advance, because we do not want to ship it before it is ready. PX8.3 is included in your current license: you pay nothing extra, and everyone with an active license can use it the moment it ships.
