CS2 One-Way Smoke and ESP: Stealth Kills

We explain how the one-way smoke mechanic physically works in CS2, lineup verification with ESP, the use of chams, and popular map points.

What is One-Way Smoke Mechanic Actually?

One-way smoke is a legitimate CS2 mechanic that takes advantage of smoke's height and density gradient; When smoke is thrown from a certain height, the upper part remains thinner and the lower part remains denser. While a player looking from a high point (e.g. over a crate or ramp) can see through the thin upper layer of smoke, the opponent at a lower point cannot see anything through the dense lower layer. This is a result of map geometry and smoke physics, not cheating; But finding the right lineup (firing point and angle) takes hours of experimentation.

How to Verify Lineup with ESP?

Manually testing whether a one-way really works means opening two accounts and observing each other — practically impossible for most players. With ESP's player skeleton view turned on, you can alone observe how clearly the opponent's silhouette appears through the smoke: If the ESP lines are clear and the smoke is visually thin, that point is a true one-way. This method is used to quickly verify community lineups on your own server, a different purpose than using ESP in a live match against the opponent.

Chams and Smoke Visibility

Standard ESP boxes also work in smoke because it reads the player skeleton regardless of the rendering engine's smoke effect, but some users prefer a custom chams (colored texture) color to see the target in smoke more clearly. A bright color (for example, neon pink) contrasts strongly with the gray smoke color, allowing the target to be clearly distinguished even through smoke. This visual distinction makes it easier to capture the right moment when shooting from a one-way position, as the opponent is normally only noticed as a faint shadow.

Difference Between One-Way Smoke and Wallhack

One-way smoke is a map/physics mechanic while wallhack is the ability to see directly through walls; The two should not be confused. In a legitimate one-way the opponent is actually visible, only the smoke makes visual perception asymmetrical. This advantage can be taken advantage of with the right lineup without using ESP; ESP comes into play here only as a verification and rapid learning tool. This distinction is important because a one-way hit seems legitimate in a demo review, while a wallhack shot from behind a wall raises much more obvious suspicion.

One-Way Points on Popular Maps

The classic one-way overlooking the Palace from ramp A in Mirage, the CT smoke on Banana in Inferno, and the smoke points in Long corner in Dust2 are the most used examples by the community. Many of these points may change from time to time with updates as Valve may update the map geometry or smoke physics engine. With ESP, CSCodep users can test these points on their own servers and save them as 'lineup notes' in the cloud config, so there is no need to retry each time.
